What is a VIN?
A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code assigned to every vehicle, acting like its fingerprint. It contains details about the vehicle’s make, model, year, and production specifics. Think of it as your car’s ID card, used for everything from registration to tracking its history.
Why Does my Fleet Tracker Need a VIN?
The All Aware Fleet Tracker uses the VIN to accurately identify and pair with your vehicle. This ensures the device pulls the right data—like fuel consumption, diagnostics, and performance metrics—specific to your vehicle’s make and model. Without the VIN, the system might misinterpret data or fail to connect properly, impacting trip history and reports.
Where Can You Find Your Vehicle’s VIN?
Your VIN is located in several places, making it easy to track down. Here are the most common spots:
Driver’s Side Door Label
Open the driver’s side door and check the door jamb or the edge of the door itself. Look for a sticker or label displaying the VIN, along with other vehicle info like tire pressure or manufacturing details.
Dashboard (Near the Windshield)
Stand outside the vehicle and look through the windshield on the driver’s side. The VIN is often displayed on a small metal or plastic plate at the base of the dashboard.
Vehicle Registration or Title Documents
Your VIN is printed on your vehicle’s registration card, title, or insurance documents. These are handy if you can’t access the physical vehicle right away.
Use the All Aware Add Vehicle Tool
With the All Aware Add Vehicle tool, finding your VIN is a breeze. Simply take a picture of the VIN on the driver’s side door label, and the tool will extract it instantly. Alternatively, snap a photo of your license plate, and the tool will decode the VIN from registration data (where available). This is perfect for quick, hassle-free VIN retrieval, especially for fleet managers handling multiple vehicles. You can access the Add Vehicle tool during the setup flow and instructions which come with your Fleet Tracker.
Always double-check the VIN to ensure accuracy, as even one incorrect character can cause issues with your OBDII device setup.
